Perception of Colour

I seem to recall we discussed this:
http://www.sciencealert.com/humans-couldn-t-even-see-the-colour-blue-until-modern-times-research-suggests

or am I imagining we did?

Regardless, an interesting concept to ponder - and also how it applies to so many other areas of our lives.

Happy summer everyone!

Remembering Installation Day

This is a 'silent' movie. I may get around to some sound adventures eventually.

This one's for Shelley

A little tip on how to unlock the Code as described to me during our day sitting the gallery. This is by no means perfect. In fact the timing of last text needs to be revised to last longer.

Cave of Forgotten Dreams by Werner Herzog

Hi everyone. I just watched the film Cave of Forgotten Dreams by Werner Herzog. If you want to visit the inside of Chauvet caves, this is a real treat. So much information. I couldn't stop taking notes. Anyway it's on youTube. Easy to find with Google. It was on TVO. Check it out.

Inspirations from V Jane

Inspirations from V Jane COLLECTED DURING MASTERCLASS 2015,DVSA

“Invent your world”
“pull out the difference with what you have got”, ask yourself what is left?”
“Let your mind think about what you want to say”….journal it.
“interpreting the mark making”
"mark making”
“data collecting”
“take risks”
“change scale”
“point to the real”
“make emotional inquiry” work it out in thumbnail
“what is your central position”
“create a vocabulary of images , honour your own mark making”

“save your painting even the ones you don't like, one day you might see it and know exactly what tot do. The work is already ahead of you”

Not Loopy Yet

My video/slideshow is 95% finished but I have run into a roadblock re looping. The "video" is in a Quicktime movie format that plays nicely on my iPhone 4S and transfers to my newly purchased TV. I have looked for an app that will loop videos and found only one: viloop. It does not recognize my movie as a video and will not play it or even admit that it exists on my iPhone. One of my video friends told me that her videos will loop on her iPod touch simply by putting it on a playlist on iTunes.  I tried that on my iPhone and the phone said it would loop but when the video ended it just stopped and went back to the screen that started the process and stayed there; i.e. no looping.

Any suggestions?

IMPORTANT NOTE: How to tell if your IMAGES WILL PRINT PROPERLY

Good morning!
Many of you are emailing images that are not sized properly for print.
The resolution for printing is different than the resolution for an on screen image.

What might look perfect on your computer, may print fuzzy in the catalog.

Here is how you can check to see if your images are 'big enough':
  • View your image at full size - 100%.
  • Then view your image at 200%. If the 200% image is fuzzy, then your image will print fuzzy.

Please make sure to send images at minimum 150dpi. If you are not sure, please check with someone who can help you.

Thanks!
Shelley

REMINDER ABOUT FORMAT for providing catalog information

Hello everyone!
I am back from Nicaragua and just sorting through many emails.

AS A REMINDER, please remember to send me your Artist Statements as 'Word' documents, with the extensions .doc or .docx.

If you do not have Word, then please simply put the information in the body of the email and I will block and copy it into a Word document. (Note: "Pages" is not a Word program.)

Also, please be certain to give me the full spelling of your name, how you want it to appear in the catalog as well as the title of your project, if you want that included in the catalog.

See you all on Wednesday.

RunningBlind

A gif rough before moving on to AE. Zinglada is running blind and 'bumping' into trouble.
or something.
Work in progress...

Who Am I?
Costay Family Tree

each stone will have some work painted, carved or overlayed...

Costay (first draft artist statement)

Who am I?

Why do we feel compelled to search and trace our family roots?

When we find them, these names are just that, names, and in many occasions not linked to the immediacy of our current lives.

But they do root us in history. They make us feel connected to something, however obscure and seemingly aimless.

Connected to everything, where if you go back far enough, you can see we are related to everyone.  Deep. We all have shared blood in our veins. Are we family?

Who are you?

IMPORTANT INFO: we @ you me 2015 catalog information

Here are some more things we all need to know:
1) The catalog is a square 7" x 7" format with a soft cover.
  • Everyone will have 4 consecutive pages in the catalog - each layout will be a double page spread (2 sets of 2 facing pages).
  • Your first spread will have your name, project name & copy on the left page and a single full size image on the right hand page. This will be consistent for everyone.
  • The second set of pages will follow a format that is more specific to what you will be providing, dependent on number of images and any other copy.
  •  We will create the catalog in alphabetical order by last name.

2) Materials you will need to prepare for the catalog:
You will need to provide an artist's statement and 3-5 photos of your work.
A) Your artist's statement
  1. Please prepare your artist's statement with enough time to review it with Vjane; she will provide input/feedback for the final document
  2. Please supply the artist's statement in a plain, unformatted Word document with your name and title of your work at the top. Attach your artist's statement to an email and send it to me. Please do not send it to me in the body of an email.
  3. Please make sure you have spell checked it.
  4. Please make sure your word document is saved/named as follows: FirstnameLastname.doc  For example, mine would be ShelleyYampolsky.doc
  5. If you will have copy on your second set of pages, please clearly indicate 'page1', 'page2', 'page3'.  Note, there will be no copy on your first right hand page other than a caption.

B) Photos of your work
  1. Please provide a minimum of 3 photos of your work: 1 feature image and 2 (minimum) - 4 (maximum) detail or support images
  2. Please supply these as jpgs, 150dpi - 300 dpi. A general rule of thumb to see if your images are high enough resolution is to increase the size of the image 200%. If the image is still sharp at 200%, you are generally 'safe'. If you are unsure, please connect with Dean for feedback.
  3. Note that if your original image is not completely sharp, the final printed image will not be sharp.
  4. Please make sure your jpgs are saved/named as follows: LastnameImagenumberTitleofwork.jpg.  For example, my feature image would be called: Yampolsky1Horse.jpg; additional support or detail images would be titled: Yampolsky2Horse.jpg, Yampolsky3.jpg, Yampolsky4.jpg and Yampolsky5.jpg.
  5. If you want captions on your images, please provide the captions in your word document with your artist's statement and reference the image numbers.

3) March 18 is the due date for everything emailed to me at this address.
Please respect my time :)
March 18 deadline only gives me 7 working days to put the whole thing together in order for us to have the files out the door in time for production.  If you are waiting to provide the feature photo until the last possible minute, I understand and will do my best to accommodate; understanding you may have to push the 'go' button before you are totally ready to do so.
I cannot physically place 14 images into the catalog the night of March 24 - which is our 'out the door' date.
4) If you have any questions, please post them here on the blog so we can all see them. I will answer them there.

Here we go!  Hold onto your hats! It's going to be fun :)
Shelley
PS: I may have inadvertently not included some of our class mates on the email. If that is the case, can you please forward this to them and copy me on the email so I can be certain to include them in future communications.

Notes on the publication for YouMe exhibition

Hello all, here follow my notes re the publication discussion at DVSA on Wednesday this week. If anyone remembers more or notices a misunderstanding on my part, please add a comment or post. thanks, rika

vJane spoke about how part of the artist's practice is to 'become the beholder' of one's own work. This means In my simplistic terms, putting work up for others to see and preparing one's artist's statement. The artist's statement helps one separate from one's work in order to become the beholder. Or something like that :)

The publication is a catalogue of the exhibition. It represents each artist and includes a foreword or introduction from/by vJane. These are useful for the artist going forward making presentations or applying for grants and such. It makes sense to me as a portfolio piece. A convenient way to show someone what you participated in. The new online digital publishing has made this affordable.

In recent years, for this class, the group have produced a small format catalogue. Our group more or less agreed this was the route to go vs many artist statements in a binder like in the good old days.

We will be asked to prepare an artist's statement, an image representing our work as well as a series of partial images, fragments or images of work in progress (cannot remember vJane's exact words) to accompany the text/comments from others in the show.

Each artist will be represented by 4 pages (2 spreads).
One spread with Artist's Statement text page and image of work on facing page.
The 2nd spread will be the fragments of work images and the selected comments.
We will each provide comments on the others works, which vJane will choose from to accompany the reference work.

Shelley and Dean have offered to steer this publication. It will be published online via Blurb. And likely the content needs to be uploaded to Blurb at least 2 weeks before our show.

They will need some days to do the online formatting and preparation.
With that in mind, Shelley will prepare and circulate a list of due dates and requirements in order for us to get the content collected, so it can then be uploaded to the Blurb site, and books be available for purchase in time for our opening.

You can see samples of the last year by visiting Blurb.ca and searching Tony Vander Voet.

Detritus

Continuing to move through the horse trope, I am in the process of covering the Carousel Horse (now on a set of rockers, though I do feel somewhat 'off my own rocker') with black fondant to create patterns/strata with push pins angled to capture ambient light. To get the pins to the size I need for this, I have had to trim them down with a small wire cutter leaving pin remnants.

While I love this part of the project, and will continue with it, I am excited - finally - about what else I am seeing: the detritus!

These pieces, and the ones I originally explored, feel more alive and dynamic. They are starting to make a bit more sense, though I am not yet sure how to organize it all.

I look forward to your feedback, impressions and thoughts, tomorrow during class or here now.

Thanks!

Jenny Holzer on the Difficulties of Being a Successful Female Artist

Shared from Zite

Thinking about 'why' this article came up in my Zite news feed today.

Rika Balke shared with you:

Jenny Holzer on the Difficulties of Being a Successful Female Artist

blog.longreads.com - I would describe [my career] as a slow incline with various dips rather than a steep trajectory, but I was relatively young when I did a show at DIA, then the Guggenheim, and represented the United States at the Venice Biennale. During that time, I also had a baby. Those three shows all took place within a few years, and that was an insane time. I worked on DIA when I was pregnant, had a young child for the Guggenheim, and my daughter celebrated her second birthday at the Venice Biennale. I don't recommend that. I see why guys don't do it. Although it was a great period for learning-realising, art is hard (and it should be). The rest of my life was desperately difficult at moments.

Publication?

I would like to raise this issue at this time.

We have been producing a  publication for the class exhibition  for a number of years. It gives  participants a chance to practice professional skills writing statements producing images for publication and commenting on each other's work. It also is a significant document in the process that allows artists an objective look at their own production.
In addition the document is helpful documentation when making proposals for exhibitions.

Tony has been doing this for the past 3 years or so but is not participating this year!
I have a huge class for a mentoring situation and I can't take the publication on either.

I would like you all to think about these issues and see what you are interested in producing as a group

This is a first run around with this issue and everyone should feel free to say   Think or opine about this and we will take a little time to share thoughts on Wed.
